Microsoft Word is a word processing software widely utilized by the academic community of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and the general public, whether for compiling reports, academic manuscripts, administration, or other official documents. One element frequently encountered in document preparation is the table. However, users often face obstacles in tidying up the appearance of tables, resulting in a final output that looks poorly structured.

To ensure the document preparation process becomes more efficient and professional, there is a simple method to tidy up tables in seconds using built-in Microsoft Word features.

1. Select the Entire Table The first step is to select the table in its entirety. Users can choose one of the following two methods:

  • Select manually using the cursor, or
  • Click the “+” icon located at the top left corner of the table to select all rows and columns simultaneously.

Full selection is necessary so that the entire table structure can be processed automatically in the next step.

2. Use the AutoFit Feature for Automatic Adjustment Once the table is selected, users can utilize the AutoFit feature, a function designed to adjust table sizes automatically without the need to manually set column widths one by one.

The steps are:

  • Open the Table Layout tab.
  • Click the AutoFit menu.
  • Select the AutoFit to Content option.

This option will adjust the column width based on the length or amount of text inside, making the table appearance more proportional, neat, and easy to read.

Benefits of Using AutoFit in Document Preparation The AutoFit feature offers several significant advantages in the document processing workflow:

  1. Time Efficiency Users no longer need to adjust column sizes manually. In a matter of seconds, the table appears neater and more structured.
  2. Consistent and Professional Results AutoFit ensures the table has the correct proportions for every column and row, resulting in a look that is more formal and suitable for use in academic reports or official documents.
  3. Facilitates Data Review and Presentation A neatly arranged table is easier to understand, whether by readers, lecturers, or administrative staff receiving the document.

The use of simple yet effective features like AutoFit is part of the digital literacy advancement continuously encouraged by Universitas Sumatera Utara. The ability to manage documents efficiently is a crucial skill in the digital era, especially for students, education personnel, and all parties involved in academic and administrative activities.
